After many years association with conducting floor coating through two leading companies SkidProof and SlipRisk, the former MD of those companies was disturbed to find many architects, builders and designers chose to ignore or simply did not understand that floors must be safe when specified and the majority of floors are simply quite unsafe and illegal
Furthermore some floor and floor coating companies offer products based on Pendulum Testing they conducted themselves, the testing is not independent; not all the floor testing equipments are calibrated and the methods used do not necessarily respect British Standards for Floor Testing (BS 7976-
FloorSlip can allow you as manager or employer to meet your legal duty of care to ensure floor safety at work as defined by Health and Safety Legislation.
A risk management plan should include a floor risk assessment for every floor and a floor test certificate to show every floor surface has a minimum ‘Slip Resistance Value’ (SRV) also known as the ‘Pendulum Test Value’ (PTV) and as determined by the Health and Safety Executive / United Kingdom Slip Resistance Group
(See ‘How we Slip test floors’ below)
In our opinion flooring companies offering floor testing could be biased in offering flooring solutions and lead you to choosing floor coverings, which might not provide true correct slip resistant properties to prevent the slip on floor scenarios for the work environment its placed in – for example, would a non slip floor coating designed to prevent a slippery floor surface in the kitchen work as well on the oil rigs?
FloorSlip agents conduct the floor slip testing to flooring standards set by the HSE* and aligned with the recommendations of the UKSRG*. Floor Slip Risk assessments include: -
1. Visual Floor Checks and floor risk analysis looking for effective floor cleaning, slip and fall hazards and correct safety footwear
2. Surface Roughness Tests to build up recorded evidence of floor conditions and can be used to monitor wear of slippery flooring over time to give you early signs of loss of grip potential
3. Flooring Advice on floor materials, suppliers and coatings, such as acid etch; there are no typical floors; each environment requires different floor properties
4. Pendulum Testing to determine the ‘Coefficient Of Friction’ (CoF) – the technical term for the Slip Resistance Value (SRV).
