A sled floor tester is a self powered trolley that drags itself across the floor surface, measuring the Coefficient of Friction as it moves.
Health & safety Laboratory based assessments have strongly suggested that several floor tests currently available and particularly the sled type can produce misleading data in wet floor conditions and Information from such tests show some smooth flooring appears to be less slippery in wet conditions than when dry! This is clearly controversial when compared to everyday experience.
The HSE quote “SLED TESTS can be used for the accurate measurement of floor surface friction, provided that the floors under examination are completely clean and dry. It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that such tests are NOT used to assess the slipperiness of wet or contaminated floors. It has been shown on many occasions that such tests may produce misleading information when used in such conditions”.
As this test is not recommended by the HSE for floor slip resistance testing then, as a consequence, FloorSlip do not use them to test floors. FloorSlip in line with the UK HSE and HSL only use the ‘British Pendulum’ Test Equipment for Testing Floors
