Please note -
The Tortus Style* Floor Tester uses a weighted rubber slider, which is dragged across a floor surface to give a read out.
* TORTUS is a WESSEX brand name but manufacturers copy the name for ease of identification of the floor test type.
The HSE has advised “It is an invalid test for pedestrian slipping as it gives incorrect results in contaminated conditions”.
Overall the test does NOT replicate the action of a persons heel striking a floor. It is recommended that the Pendulum Test is used for the purpose of floor slip resistance testing as the results can be used in a court of law for or against a claim for a floor slip accident injury.
As this test is not recommended by the HSE for floor slip resistance testing then, as a consequence, FloorSlip do not use them to test floors.
We think it’s a play on words... The word Tort used in Law means Wrong; the Latin for twisted or Crooked is Tortus; and Tortus translates to tortoise in medieval languages. We therefore surmise it moves like a tortoise across a slippery floor and its results can be used to determine if a floor type is wrong or twisted.
